Associations

I know that we all have different associations. Did you know that the home you live in, the clothes you wear, the causes you back, the food you eat, the beliefs you hold and the past times you enjoy will all be similar to those of your closest associations? Did you know that you will mirror your associations to within 20% of their income? We like to be around people who are like us.

Associations are very important in determining who we’ll become in our lifetime and in most cases who we already are. Take inventory of your relationships. Are the conducive to the goals you have for yourself?

If you want to quit smoking, do you think it will be harder if you associate with friends who want to continue smoking? What if your goal is to be a part of a humanitarian project? Associate with humanitarian minded people! Fighters associate with fighters, teachers with teachers, entrepreneurs with entrepreneurs and so on.  In a world of nearly 7 billion people, we’re bound to find someone that has the same goals as us.

Each of us has an innate desire to improve our station. We want to progress. If you don’t, this probably isn’t the best group to join.

When I think of associations, I generally think of people. However, we have a lot of different associations that are all bidding for our time. Consider the books you read, the TV shows you watch and your favorite internet sites. Are they moving you in the direction you would like to go? If you read one hour a day every day for the next year, you could potentially finish 100 new books. Could it benefit you to choose books that are in alignment with your goals? The average person watches 15 years of television in their lifetime. That to me is astounding as I have yet to find a show that is worth that much time. What kind of TV shows are you watching? Are they in alignment with your goals? Do your friends support you in your goals? Family?

Our closest associations are those things that we allow into our space on a frequent basis.

As you choose your associations in your life, be conscious of the goals you have. Choose all of your associations wisely as they will determine your outcome.

Keep wobbling!

Gratitude

My wife tells me repeatedly that the key to abundance is gratitude. Last night as I was pondering  this the words to a song I have sung many times at church came to mind. The words are simple and profound;

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

I look around at all that I have in my life and realize as I count out all the blessings that are mine, how abundant they are. I live in a land of freedom, my wife and children love me unconditionally, I have a warm home and a comfortable bed, I am healthy, millions of things are going right in the world today and many of those are right here in my own life.

I have so many things to be grateful for. In realizing what I do have, the thoughts of what I don’t have dissipate. It creates the space for the abundance that is mine to flow into my life.

I challenge you to be grateful throughout the day. Say thank you to the person that cuts you off while driving. Thank those that serve you. Thank your enemies. If they hadn’t done what they did, would you have learned a lesson?

I know there is space for gratitude in all situations. The perspective you hold on the situation will determine whether you can see the blessings.

Utah Refugees

I recently had an article published with Utah Stories discussing the challenges that refugees face as they come into our country on the re-settlement programs.
